Meet Julie-May

Julie-May was raised in a blue-collar family in a regional community. She discovered her passion for psychology as a mature age student and single mother at James Cook University, becoming the first person in her large extended family to attend university. Her diverse life experiences have shaped her strong commitment towards equality, fairness and justice.

With a deep appreciation for the benefits of her education, Julie-May has been a strong advocate for change within government, organizations, systems, and for individuals. After navigating many challenges in life, she now enjoys a peaceful life in rural NSW with her husband and three dogs.

EMDR Specialist

For almost two decades, Julie-May has dedicated her focus to EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) therapy. Research shows that EMDR is effective in 77% of cases and is considered the most efficient and effective evidence-based treatment for trauma.

Developed in 1987 by Francine Shapiro, EMDR is a relatively new therapy. Despite being supported by extensive research and internationally recognized as 'best practice' for treating trauma, EMDR has only recently gained widespread acceptance. This growing recognition is largely due to the increasing number of accredited clinicians, which has expanded public access to this remarkable therapy.

Dr. Julie-May is committed to maintaining and expanding her EMDR skills. As a former EMDRAA accredited Consultant, she has taken pride in contributing to the supervision and guidance of Australian and New Zealand EMDR practitioners.

Professional Experience

With over twenty years of experience in both private and public sectors, Dr. Julie-May has served as a Military Psychologist (CAPT), worked with Centrelink, Disability Services QLD, and Employee Assistance Services. She has also dedicated eight years as a voluntary expert consultant for the EMDRAA Accreditation and Standards Committee and has spent fifteen years in private practice.

Dr Julie-May completed her EMDR training in 2008 and is recognized by the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) as an accredited EMDR Practitioner and former Consultant/Supervisor.

In Australia and New Zealand, she is respected as a highly skilled EMDR clinician, working within an ethical, multidisciplinary, and solution-focused framework.
